Look into sports teams, clubs or other organizations. Provide many hands-on lessons. When learning about another culture, for example, find a recipe from that culture that you can make with your children. This is also useful for social studies and anthropology topics. Studying ancient Rome? Break out the figs, dates and togas! Prepare dishes and snacks from the countries you are studying or help your children put together some costumes from the historical periods you studied. If more than one sense is used, more information will be absorbed. Remember that even if you aren't teaching art, you should use art when giving lessons. Draw pictures about things you are learning or make a quilt with fabric. Try sculpture, drama, paintings or writing a song. The possibilities are endless! The more active your children are while they are learning, the more that total immersion will help the lesson to stick in their minds. If you want to homeschool, make sure to do research first. There are lots of resources to learn a bit more about the reality of homeschooling. No matter how much you may like the idea, you need to be sure you have the time, energy and financial resources to give your children a great education. There are many benefits to teaching your child at home due to the lack of space and resources at public schools these days. That being said, making sure your kids get a good education means gauging their success by having them do your state's different standardized tests. If your child is lagging behind his age-peers in one or more areas, then hiring a tutor is the best way to remedy this.
